How our telephone adapter works when you supply your own internet and router. We send a telephone adapter box with your line on Phone1.
Don't worry if this sounds different from a traditional phone line. When you use your own broadband, we supply a telephone adapter and you supply the internet connection.
Quick answer
We send a telephone adapter box with your line on Phone1. You plug it into power and into your own router with a network cable. Your home phone plugs into Phone1 on the adapter.
More detail
This service is for customers who already have broadband from another provider. Simple Telecoms supplies the phone service and the telephone adapter. We do not supply your router or internet connection.
Your phone calls travel over your existing internet. If your broadband stops, your home phone stops too until the internet returns.
The adapter is preconfigured with your landline number on Phone1. You should not need to change settings on the adapter yourself.
We do not offer support for your broadband router, Wi-Fi, or internet speed. Contact your broadband provider for those problems.
Many routers have a setting called SIP ALG that can stop incoming calls or cause poor audio. We warn about this in your quote. Turn SIP ALG off in your router. See Incoming calls not ringing (your own broadband)
Your phone needs mains power for the adapter and a working internet connection. Plan for 999 in a power cut with a charged mobile. See Emergency calls during a power cut
What you'll need
- Telephone adapter box, power lead, and network cable from Simple Telecoms
- Handset adapter cable and your home phone
- Your own working broadband router and internet connection
- Access to your router settings or your broadband provider contact details
Before you begin
- Check your welcome letter matches the adapter in the box.
- Have your broadband provider details ready if you cannot find SIP ALG in the router menu.
Set up your telephone adapter
-
Confirm your own broadband is working before you start. Open a website on a device connected to your router, or ask your broadband provider if you are unsure.
You should know your home internet is online before testing the phone.
-
Unpack the telephone adapter, power lead, network cable, and handset adapter from the box.
You should have all parts listed on your welcome letter.
-
Plug the adapter into a mains socket and connect the network cable from the adapter network port to a LAN port on your broadband router.
The adapter should have power and a network link to your router.
-
Wait until the power light on the adapter is steady green and the network light shows activity.
You should see steady green power when the adapter is ready. Slow flashing means it is still starting.
-
Plug the handset adapter into Phone1 on the adapter, then plug your home phone into the other end.
Your phone cable should run from Phone1 to your handset, not to a wall socket.
-
Make a short outgoing test call, then ask someone to call your home number back.
Both test calls should connect with clear sound if setup is correct.
-
Turn off SIP ALG in your broadband router settings, or ask your broadband provider to turn it off.
Incoming calls should ring reliably after SIP ALG is off.
What success looks like
The adapter power light is steady green, test calls in and out work, and incoming calls ring when someone calls your home number.
Common mistakes
- Plugging the phone into a wall socket instead of Phone1 on the adapter.
- Using a Wi-Fi connection for the adapter instead of a network cable to the router.
- Expecting Simple Telecoms to fix your broadband when only the phone service is with us.
- Leaving SIP ALG switched on in the router.
Things to know

- See Incoming calls not ringing (your own broadband) if incoming calls fail.
- See Poor call quality with your own broadband for crackling or one-way audio.
