Improve speed and stability. R

Don't worry about slow internet. Speed can often improve with a reboot, fewer Wi-Fi devices, or a wired test.

Quick answer

Reboot the router, test with a cable if possible, move router away from thick walls, and note speeds before reporting.

More detail

Slow speed affects phone call quality on shared lines.

Wi-Fi is slower than a cable plugged into the router.

Many devices streaming at once share your bandwidth.

Improve speed

  1. Reboot router and wait for ready lights.

  2. Run a speed test on a laptop plugged by cable to router if you can.

  3. Repeat speed test on Wi-Fi standing near router.

  4. Turn off unused tablets and TVs using internet.

  5. Move router to central location, off floor if possible.

  6. Note speeds in Mbps and time of day.

  7. Report if wired speed stays far below your expected package.

Common mistakes

  • Testing speed only on phone Wi-Fi in far bedroom.
  • Expecting full speed on old Wi-Fi devices.
  • Reporting before one proper reboot.
