How to connect your phone (Physical line)

Don't worry if you have never plugged in a phone yourself. Connecting your home phone takes a few minutes when you follow the steps in order.

You have a router or telephone adapter box with a Phone1 socket on the back.

Set up and power on your router or telephone adapter box first. See Setting up your router or adapter box if you have not done this yet.

You should see at least one light on the front of the box.
Wait until the broadband or internet light on the front of the box turns green.

You should see a steady green broadband or internet light before plugging in your phone.
Find the Phone1 socket on the back of the box. It is labelled Phone1 or phone and is smaller than the internet port.

You should see a small phone socket labelled Phone1, phone, or tel on the back of the box.
Plug the supplied handset adapter into the Phone1 socket until it clicks.

The adapter should sit firmly in Phone1 with no gap at the socket.
Plug your home phone into the other end of the handset adapter.

Your phone cable should run from the adapter to your handset or base unit, not to a wall socket.
Pick up the phone. You may hear a steady dial tone or silence. Both can be normal on digital lines.

Do not assume silence means the line is broken. You can still try dialling.
Dial a full UK mobile number including the area code. Press send or call if your phone has that button, then wait for ringing or dialling tones.

The test call should connect with clear sound if the line is working.
