Restore service after power returns. For Physical line customers. A

Don't worry after a power cut. This guide is for when electricity has come back but your phone is not working yet.

Quick answer

After electricity returns, your Physical line router or adapter box may need a few minutes before the phone works again.

More detail

After electricity returns, your Physical line router or adapter box may need a few minutes before the phone works again.

This guide is for after power comes back, not during the cut. See Emergency calls during a power cut if the power is still off.

Check cordless phone base stations have mains power too. They plug into a normal socket separately from the router.

After power returns on a Physical line

  1. Confirm mains power works in the room with the router.

  2. Check the router power switch and lead are connected.

  3. If lights are stuck, switch the router off at the power socket for 30 seconds, then on.

  4. Wait at least three minutes for the broadband light to turn green.

  5. Check cordless base stations have power if you use cordless phones.

  6. Pick up the phone on Phone1. You may hear silence or dial tone on digital lines. Both can be normal.

  7. Dial a full UK mobile number including the area code. Press send or call if your phone has that button, then wait for ringing or dialling tones.

  8. Make a short test call to confirm the line.

Common mistakes

  • Testing the phone before the broadband light is ready.
  • Leaving the router unplugged after storm precautions.
  • Forgetting cordless base stations need their own mains power.
